Two Workshops, 6 CE-approved hours. Registration is for the full day. No half-day sign ups. Participants must attend both sessions to earn CE hours.

Parking:  There is a parking garage that is attached to the Outpatient Center, on the corner of 52nd St. and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. The entrance is off of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Parking is $9.00 per day.

Allow extra time for parking as there will be some construction going on at this exact corner.

Shuttle from BART:  The hospital has a free shuttle that goes from the MacArthur BART station every 15 minutes. The drop off is right across the street from the Outpatient Center. Look for the shuttle with the markings of UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland on the outside of the shuttlebus.

Interpreting in Pediatrics: Interpreting for Children and Parents

  •  Learn different strategies to communicate with children.
  •  Learn to understand and decode message from a child’s speech
  •   Develop techniques and strategies to have less stressful outcomes and maintain the clinical importance of the encounter.

Interpreting pediatric encounters are particularly challenging. There are multiple situations that can affect or get in the way of establishing and maintaining an effective flow of information. It is also very common to find out that the bilingual child is accompanied by LEP parent/s or relative/s. In this 3-4 hour workshops we will delve into the intricacies and difficulties of interpreting in pediatric medical encounters. Attendees will learn about the different strategies to communicating with children, steps to understand what a child is saying and the various differences between interpreting for adults and interpreting for children. We will role play and analyze various scenarios to cover different strategies that medical interpreters need to follow to have a less stressful outcome and maintain the clinical importance of the encounter. Actual cases will be presented for study and group exercises will allow for further exploration of interpreting pediatric encounters. (Approved for 1 Performance Based hour, 3 CEUs total.)

Objectives

  • Learn the full meaning of interpreting in a trauma center by practicing various scenarios
  • Learn advanced and specific medical terminology pertinent to trauma
  • Learn to cope with stressful situations that a trauma call involves.
  • Learn about the different kinds of trauma calls, and various strategies to cope with the "trauma pace.”


In this 3-hour workshop, attendees will learn the full meaning of interpreting in a trauma center. Interpreting trauma implies knowledge of advanced medical terminology, as well as energy and skills tailored to the stressful situations that a trauma call involves. Attendees will learn about the different kinds of trauma calls, specialized and advanced terminology needed for some of these extreme calls, and ways to cope with the "trauma pace.” We will cover different strategies that medical interpreters need to follow to have a less stressful outcome. Actual cases will be presented for study and group exercises will allow for further exploration of interpreting at a Level I trauma center. This session will invite attendees to participate in various interpreting scenarios taken from actual encounters in the medical setting. (Approved for TAHIT 2016 Conference by CCHI for 2 Performance Based hours, 3 CEUs total.)

Alvaro Vergara-Mery, PhD, CMI is a Senior Medical Interpreter at University Medical Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. He is in charge of interpreter education and training, language proficiency, cultural competence, translation and curriculum design. He has extensive experience as a practicing medical interpreter in a Level I Trauma center that serves a large population of Spanish-speaking patients and he is nationally recognized for his advanced level workshops for medical interpreters. He is also a a cultural and language access consultant, Bridging the Gap certified trainer, and adjunct faculty member at the University of Nevada Las Vegas School of Medicine. He was recipient of CHIA's Trainer of the Year in 2016.
