This year’s theme is “Setting the Stage for Success: California Adopts the CHIA Standards,” which reflects the State’s incorporation of the CHIA Standards in new language assistance regulations. For the first time, we are starting programming on Friday morning, with two-hour workshops being the focus of the first day.The conference will also include site visits to Stanford Hospital.

Chaplain Bruce Feldstein, MD. is a hospital chaplain at Stanford Hospital and Clinics, and founder and director of The Jewish Chaplaincy at Stanford University School of Medicine. This workshop recognizes the importance of spirituality in healing and healthcare, and the role of the chaplain-interpreter partnership in providing spiritual care.
Rabbi Lori Klein and Reverend Susan Scott. Hospital Chaplains are the members of the healthcare team whose primary role is to provide spiritual care; and in many cases chaplains require the assistance of interpreters. This workshop recognizes the importance of spirituality in healing and healthcare, and the role of the chaplain-interpreter partnership in providing spiritual care.
Beverly Treumann is Program and Quality Assurance Director for Healthcare Interpreter Network (HCIN), a cooperative of California hospitals and healthcare providers sharing trained healthcare interpreters through an automated video/voice call center system. This presentation describes how the Healthcare Interpreter Network is working with hospital interpreters and administrators to help raise awareness about standards for interpreting in a healthcare setting.
Nora Goodfriend-Koven, MPH is the coordinator and lead instructor for the Healthcre Interpreting Program within the Department of Health Education and Community Health Studies at City College of San Francisco. This workshop differentiates the skills needed in interpreting from those needed for translation. Participants identified process and technical considerations in translations and strategies for self-assessment.
